Driesell was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007, but his entry into the Naismith shrine proved more elusive. But on that winter night in 1985 even Knight's mother, Hazel, sensed something was different as she watched the scene. In the years following the chair-throwing game, former players told stories of Knight's practices, with some alleging physical, verbal or emotional abuse. The chair stopped near the sideline and Reid helped retrieve it, linking him with Knight for college basketball eternity. The Hall of Fame coach died Wednesday surrounded by his family at his home in Bloomington, Indiana, his family said in a statement. Knight was called "a legend among coaches" by the Basketball Hall of Fame, where he was inducted in 1991. Knight was Big Ten coach of the year five times and a four-time national coach of the year.

CNN —Bobby Knight, who was one of college basketball’s winningest coaches and who guided Indiana University to three national championships, has died at the age of 83, his family announced on Wednesday. “It is with heavy hearts that we share that Coach Bob Knight passed away at his home in Bloomington (Indiana) surrounded by his family,” his family posted to his website. Known as “The General,” Knight won 11 Big Ten Conference titles and 662 games in 29 seasons at Indiana. Knight also coached the gold medal-winning US men’s basketball team during the 1984 Summer Olympics Games in Los Angeles. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991, the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006 and the IU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.

One day in the early 1980s Indiana women’s basketball coach was sitting alone in the Hoosiers’ arena when Indiana men’s coach Bob Knight asked what was wrong. “I said, ‘Well, I’m trying to figure out how to raise money to get an assistant,’” the women’s coach at the time, Maryalyce Jeremiah, recalled. “He said, ‘How much do you need?’ I told him, and he got it for me.”
